How did we celebrate Christmas in ILOILO?

496 children received school supplies, toys, clothing, food, slippers (flip Flops), at the Sonshine Center, Mike's Rotary Club of Central ILOILO "Wish Upon A Star" program, and Uswag Village formerly San Isidro Relocation Site. At Uswag Village 50 families received food bags. All our kids are street kids or from squatter villages in ILOILO.
It has been a great Christmas season and our supporters and prayer partners made it possible.
We all Thank You and say Merry Christmas and have a Blessed New Year.

A very busy fall

After returning from the USA in October we have been very busy. We helped David celebrate his 11th birthday. He never had a birthday party with cake, ice cream and gifts before. David is the young boy at San Isidro who we are helping, he has a very serious heart condition. We then helped with APO a special 1 week GTN training. APO prepares and commissions nationals for missions work. This first class had 22 Filipinos from ILOILO, Manila and Davao. All completed this very intense training
and will now serve Our Lord on the mission field.
Today we just concluded a visit from our GTN President Dr. Jerry Williamson and 11 pastors and laypersons from the USA. They came to see the ministry in ILOILO. We were excited and challenged as they shared with us.

The US Ambassador's visit to San Isidro and our children

The Honorable Harry K. Thomas Jr. visited the school and handed out book bags and helped feed our children to start the new school year. Ambassador Thomas shared the day with us and gave a very encouraging and challenging message to our children, parents and teachers. It was a great day and we deeply thank him for his visit.

Today we experienced Good Friday the Philippine way. We toured this old Cathedral and experienced true Philippine Easter culture. Built as a church/fort it has 5 foot thick walls. You can read its history. A very beautiful church and we had an amazing day.

The week before Christmas was very busy with Jude giving the message at Mom's Club and the Christmas Party for 308 children who attend the Sonshine Center. For us it was a very blessed time and we were so excited to be a part of all that went on.

Saturday was an incredible day. 291 mountain people saw a medical doctor and 100 people saw the dentist. We again joined Kayang-Kayang Ministry, the Philippine Army, plus the local government assisted us. Again there were many first time decisions to follow Jesus.

We are honored again to partner with Kayang-Kayang Ministry International the Philippine Army / Air Force to participate in another med. outreach. We saw 32 mountain families about 175 people. Many salvations, everyone saw a medical doctor or dentist, young boys were circumcised, everyone received hot soup, clothing and medication. It was a blessed day.

We were honored to be asked to partner with Kayang-Kayang Ministry International and the 47th Infantry Battalion to help with the medical outreach last Saturday. 68 families / 250 people were seen by a doctor. All received medical care, dental, 16 young boys were circumcised, medication, clothing, toys, counseling & prayer, a hot meal and many salvations were the order of the day. God really showed up and it was amazing to see Him in the lives of these beautiful families.

I had the honor of preaching to the soldiers and families of the Philippine 47th Infantry Battalion up in the mountains outside of ILOILO. It was great fun and many raised their hands and received our Lord.

A Week Of R&R in Guam

We finally took some time off. We had 2 reasons, for rest & relaxation, and because every 6 months we must leave The Philippines to renew our visa's. We did relax and Jude was able to visit the island where her dad spent some of WWII. We went snorkeling for the first time, went to the Pacific War Museum, viewed the island from Nimitz Hill and ate American food. Guam is beautiful!

God really showed up. On Feb. 27th, 210 children ages 3 to 12 with a parent came to the Sonshine Center for medical screening. We had 21 Doctors from St. Paul Hospital and Western Visayes State University Hospital. There were many salvations and 5 healings. We thank the Lord for a great day and to all our supporters who made this possible.

This year we have 7 third year missionary students from CFNI (Christ for the Nations.) They are with us for 10 weeks learning the ropes of missionary life. We are extremely impressed by Charles and Samantha Allen who brought their 4 month old son Noah with them.

Several weeks ago our missionary team went to Calajunan (City Trash Dump) and San Isidro Relocation Site to gather water from their deep wells. We took the samples to the local hospital lab for chemical and biological analysis. The results came back that all wells failed and that the water is contaminated and not drinkable. However these wonderful people use this water daily to drink, cook and wash with. God has put on our heart to help them by providing them with a water purification system called Bio-Sand Filtration.

Sweet Rest and Great Celebration

It has been almost a year since Mary, Edwin and their family of 6 moved into their 8 x 12 foot space at San Isidro Relocation Transit Housing. Sleeping accommodations consisted of cardboard cartons on the concrete floor. In February 2 large foam mattresses were given to them, but they were still on the floor. The question was "what will fit into this 8 x 12 foot space?" The question has been answered. On September 11, Mary and her family became the proud owners of 2 sets of bunk beds, or "double beds" as they are known here. The beds fit the space and in addition to the beds, Mary and family have 4 new mattresses. What better way for the oldest son of Mary to celebrate his 18th birthday on September 12th, than to get a good night's sleep. So on Saturday, the 12th, we celebrated with a "Cake Party". Celebrating Nonoy's birthday and the beds. Smiles and laughter were the order of the day.

Hygiene Clinic for Kidz Club

On the last Saturday of August, the staff of Camp Sonshine and all the Calvary Missionaries got together to do a Hygiene Clinic for all the children that attend Saturday's Kidz Club. Many of our children suffer from head lice, and like all kids, they need their hands and feet washed and their nails cut. This clinic gives us a chance to see what condition their feet are in and if there is any infection, non-healing sores or foreign objects stuck in their feet. We managed to do over 70 of our kids, but we will have to repeat the clinic this Saturday to get the rest. The children were great. While they were waiting for their turn, they got to watch a movie in the assembly room. At the end, they all received a snack and headed home with clean hair and feet. Every child was prayed over while their heads were washed and their feet were scrubbed. I couldn't help but think of the song "The Basin and The Towel". A very humbling experience at any age.

We are sorry for the date delay in our postings. Time has gone by and we have been very busy. After observing a 2 to 3 week period of mourning for Edwin, we decided that it was time to get back to the business at hand. We began by visiting with many government officials to get information regarding the statis of our relocation transit families as well as the new arrivals that we saw on our many visits to see Mary and family. Despite the monsoonal rains that flooded our house multiple times, we felt God urging us forward, opening doors and giving us opportunities to meet "those in the know". While we were visiting with the Barangay Captain, he gave us names and numbers of other governmental agencies that could give us understanding about what was going to happen to our 73+ families plus give us a chance to say to the officials, "We are here to help". All the meetings went very well. Now we are moving, with assurance and determination, toward making a difference in the lives of our families at San Isidro and Calajunan. We will list and show you some of what we are getting involved with. Please pray for God's perfect Will be done and that we be found doing what He sent us here to do.
The pictures show the new houses being built for our relocation families. The health clinic being built. The Bio-Sand Filter that we will be building for our families. And the drainage system around our house to help us not flood.

Good bye to a friend

We arrived back in Iloilo City, Philippines on July 15th, exactly one year from our initial arrival to find that a dear friend had gone home to be with the Lord just two days before. Our emotions were mixed in knowing the Edwin was with Jesus, but sorrow at not seeing our friend. Edwin left behind a wife and 5 children. We are continuing to support them in the adjustment of not having their husband and father there. We attended the wake, funeral and burial. This event introduced us to cultural differences, but offered us an opportunity to share the same wonderful, comforting presence of our Lord as we were able to give and get hugs and share our tears and prayers together.

USA Home Trip

Our trip home included visiting our home church in Texas. Mike gave a great message in two different COTR churches. Then it was off to N. C. for the wedding of our eldest son, and we spent time with the grandsons. It was beautiful and our entire family was together for the first time in many years. Then off to Montana where we spent time with our new granddaughter. We were blessed in seeing her first steps which we captured on video. Time flew by, but the trip was filled with firsts. Thank God for His Faithfulness.

On Saturday February 28th, 165 of our children with a parent from 3 squatter villages were medically evaluated. We had 11 doctors from two hospitals, the local TV Channel 10 came, medication was donated, an education area was available with pamphlets in Ilonggo, we had 70 volunteers, plus the Vice Mayor of ILOILO City attended. All the families received prayer which included 124 first time decisions for Jesus. God really showed up and what a wonderful exciting day for everyone.

We want to thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this Christmas season. Christmas here in ILOILO was such a blessing for us. We celebrated it with our Sonshine Center Kids Club all 174 of them and with the Mom's Club all 58 of them. Jollibee restaurant (like McDonalds) donated the food for the kids and Jude and staff cooked for the Mom's Club. All the kids and mom's received special Christmas presents. Truly a blessed time was had by all. All our mom's love jude and give her a big Christmas hug.

Special families after Typhoon Frank

Coming from the Gulf Coast of Texas we know about Typhoon/Hurricanes. Frank was an especially bad storm. This is the story of 56 families / 100 Children at San Isidro Relocation Site. They lost everything and we are helping them recover. We are seeing to their needs, medically, physically, and spiritually. By 2010 their will be 2000 families (15,000) people located at this site.

Eight (8) third year students from CFNI (Christ for the Nations) a Bible School in Dallas/Ft. Worth are coming to ILOILO for 10 weeks of intense missionary training. We are teaching 4 of the weeks. Much work is being done to prepare for this training. These missionary interns arrive Thursday January 15 with training starting the next day.

The next time you think that re-cycling is silly, just remember this picture. A woman at the trash site we visit has found a way to earn money for her family by taking empty juice bags and other bag containers and making purses and wallets to sell at the market. These items are so pretty and practical.

God blessed us with a wonderful home

God really blessed us. Mother Alice, now 80 years old, has 5 daughters and 50 years ago she and her husband built and gave each of them a house. Today the daughters lease them. Three weeks before we arrived was Typhoon Frank and the compound was flooded with our house having 4 feet of water and mud in it. Our wonderful landlord Teresa and husband Tony cleaned and fixed it up so we could live in it.

Will She Ever Return

Jude departed yesterday morning for Cebu a nearby island. She went to the CHE (Community Health Evangelism) Training. She will be gone 1 week and will be instructed in CHE and will return a Trainer of Trainers. She will use this very important program in the squater villages and with all children who attend the Sonshine Center here in ILOILO City. Jude will better be able to meet the medical needs of the children and their families plus add the most important element of Sharing the Word of our Lord with them.
